Severe Weather Threatens Verstappen Nürburgring 24 Hours Debut

Max Verstappen is expected to face one of the toughest challenges of his racing career during his Nürburgring 24 Hours debut after the latest weather forecasts predicted heavy rain and fog throughout the event weekend.

According to the latest Met Office forecast, the Eifel mountains are set to deliver classic Nürburgring conditions featuring persistent rain, low temperatures, heavy cloud cover, and a constant threat of fog across large sections of the Nordschleife.

Verstappen’s #3 Mercedes-AMG GT3 squad will start fourth on the grid after team-mate Dani Juncadella secured a second-row position during Top Qualifying. However, maintaining track position is expected to become extremely difficult due to rapidly changing weather conditions.

Rain has already disrupted earlier practice and qualifying sessions. Verstappen completed his first nighttime laps around the Nordschleife in treacherous wet conditions with severely limited visibility.

From a technical perspective, the combination of rain and low temperatures creates major challenges for GT3 machinery because it directly affects tyre warm-up, mechanical grip distribution, and aerodynamic stability through the Nordschleife’s high-speed corners.

For Saturday’s race start, showers are forecast throughout the afternoon, while temperatures in some areas of the circuit are expected to remain below 10 degrees Celsius. Conditions are predicted to deteriorate further overnight as mist and fog begin forming across sections of the 25-kilometre layout.

Visibility has now emerged as one of the biggest concerns ahead of the race, particularly through high-speed sections such as Döttinger Höhe and the fast forested sectors of the Nordschleife, which are notoriously narrow and poorly lit.

The conditions are expected to provide a major test for Verstappen, who still has limited wet-weather and nighttime racing experience at the Nordschleife compared to many Nürburgring endurance specialists familiar with the circuit’s extreme characteristics.

Beyond the weather itself, traffic management is also expected to become a crucial factor throughout the race. The Nürburgring 24 Hours is widely regarded as one of endurance racing’s most complex events due to its multi-class traffic and rapidly changing grip conditions.

Sunday’s forecast also shows little sign of improvement, with further rain expected during the closing hours of the race. As a result, pit-stop strategy, wet tyre selection, and the ability to react quickly to changing track conditions could ultimately become decisive in the fight for victory.
