The ageing tarmac at the Sepang International Circuit has emerged as a hidden factor clouding Mercedes' understanding of its new aerodynamic package, according to Kimi Antonelli after finishing second in a chaotic Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia. The team arrived at the venue carrying a substantial seven-part upgrade package for the W17, which targeted improvements on the floor leading edge, outer floor perimeter, floor body, sidepods, engine cover, and rear suspension fairings.

The engineering update was specifically designed to clean up underfloor airflow and generate additional downforce without incurring any aerodynamic drag penalty. However, the squad departed from Sepang with lingering uncertainties over whether the new components actually delivered the desired performance gains. Meanwhile, rival teams successfully maximized their respective developments, as Red Bull's floor revisions propelled Max Verstappen to pole position and victory, while Ferrari utilized reworked diffuser winglets to secure strong front-row starting slots and podium finishes.

When questioned on whether the circuit's track surface had effectively masked the true potential of the upgrade, Kimi Antonelli admitted that the team genuinely remained in the dark. He noted that tackling circuits with severely worn tarmac has consistently exposed a recurring weakness within their package throughout the ongoing championship campaign, drawing parallels to previous struggles witnessed at venues like Zandvoort where rivals such as McLaren held a distinct advantage.

"That's the question we need to answer because we don't really know if it made us go faster or worse," Kimi Antonelli told media outlets. "Fair to say, this season, whenever we went on really old tarmac, we've struggled. For example, at Zandvoort, McLaren was much quicker than us, especially on the older tarmac. So I think maybe it's just a question; maybe it's just a fact that the tarmac is very old and that, for the tyres, it's very, very hard, and maybe we just struggle on this kind of tarmac."

The Italian driver's remarks highlight an overlooked limitation of the W17 that sheds significant light on their puzzling lack of competitive pace in Sepang. Mercedes recognizes that further running on fresher track surfaces will be essential before drawing definitive conclusions regarding the aerodynamic update. Armed with extensive data gathered over the race weekend, the technical department aims to arrive in Singapore with a clearer operational view to unlock the full capabilities of the package.
