The wait is over: Senna Agius will step up to MotoGP in 2027 with the Tech3 team. The announcement came on the eve of KTM's home race, the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring, adding extra buzz to the race weekend.
Agius, a 20-year-old Australian, will partner Luca Marini at the team now managed by Guenther Steiner. This move marks a significant step for Agius, who is currently competing in Moto2 with IntactGP.
“Today, a lifelong dream of mine has come true: reaching MotoGP,” Agius said in an official statement. “So many years of hard work have gone into this moment, and I’m incredibly grateful to Guenther and everyone at Tech3 for believing in me and giving me this opportunity.”
Agius is determined to repay that faith. “I can’t wait to repay their faith. I know the challenge ahead, but I’m ready to learn, work hard, and become the best version of myself with this team,” he added. He also thanked his family, friends, and all the teams, engineers, and mechanics who have supported him throughout his journey.
This season marks Agius’s third year in Moto2. Over that period, he has claimed three wins and two pole positions. His impressive performances have fueled rumors of a MotoGP promotion with Tech3, and now it’s official.
Guenther Steiner, now at the helm of Tech3, explained the decision. “We believe Senna has the qualities to make a very strong step into MotoGP,” Steiner said. “He has shown impressive speed and maturity in Moto2, but what really stood out to us was his determination to keep improving and his attitude towards the work required to succeed.”
Steiner added that the team is building for a new era of MotoGP. “We wanted to combine experience with young talent. Senna represents an exciting part of that future. We know there will be a lot for him to learn but we are ready to support him through that process,” he said.
Agius’s move to MotoGP coincides with major regulation changes for the 2027 season. Engines will downsize from 1000cc to 850cc, aerodynamic elements will be reduced, and holeshot devices will be eliminated entirely. This presents a challenge for all riders, especially rookies like Agius.
Tech3 team manager Nicolas Goyon also welcomed Agius. “Senna has demonstrated throughout his Moto2 career that he has both the speed and the mentality to take on this new challenge,” Goyon said. “He is still young, so there is a lot of potential for us to develop together, and we are excited to be part of the next stage of his career.”
Goyon acknowledged that starting MotoGP with completely new regulations and machinery will be a big challenge for every rider. “But it also gives us an opportunity to build something together from the beginning. Senna is hungry to learn, he works hard, and he has already shown that he can fight at the front,” he concluded.
With this announcement, Agius will be one to watch in 2027. Meanwhile, MotoGP continues this season with the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring on September 18-20.
