Russell Holds Off Verstappen in Baku, Wins by 0.1 Seconds

George Russell capped off a near-perfect weekend at the Baku Street Circuit with a dramatic victory at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver converted a dominant pole position into a win, thanks to his composure under pressure from Max Verstappen, especially after late safety car restarts. He led almost every lap and crossed the finish line just a tenth of a second ahead of the reigning champion.

For Russell, this was a win that showcased his racing maturity. He was not only fast over one lap but also managed his tyres, handled pressure, and seized critical moments. This victory has a significant impact on the drivers' standings, as he closes in on the top spot.

Qualifying: Russell Dominant, Leclerc Far Behind

A day earlier, Russell had already sent a warning. He secured his fifth pole of the season with a margin of over eight-tenths of a second over Charles Leclerc. That also maintained Mercedes' perfect qualifying record in the 2026 season. Oscar Piastri completed the front row in third, while Isack Hadjar impressed with fourth on his return.

On the other hand, Kimi Antonelli had a nightmare. The young Mercedes driver crashed into the wall at Turn 7 in Q1, damaging his front-left suspension, and had to start the race from 16th. This opened a big opportunity for Russell to extend his points lead. Meanwhile, Max Verstappen struggled with car stability and could only manage eighth, despite leading FP3. He chose to change his Red Bull engine, but was allowed to keep his grid slot as all parts were within the pool.

Carlos Sainz, who had a season-best ninth for Williams, had to take a grid penalty for a yellow flag infringement. He dropped to 14th, adding to the challenges on race day.

Race: Clean Start, Drama Behind

When the lights went out, Russell launched cleanly from pole and retained the lead into Turn 1. Piastri passed Leclerc for second. Behind them, Verstappen attacked immediately, passing Pierre Gasly and then Lewis Hamilton to move up to sixth. However, Antonelli dropped to 17th, making his recovery mission even harder.

Russell quickly built a gap of over two seconds by Lap 4. Behind him, the Red Bull duo showed incredible straight-line speed. Hadjar and Verstappen successively passed Lando Norris in quick succession. Hadjar then sliced past Leclerc for third before pulling aside on Lap 7 to let Verstappen through, who was on a split strategy. Verstappen then targeted Piastri for second, but the McLaren driver put up a stout defence through the technical castle section. Stuck in dirty air, Verstappen began overheating his medium tyres and fell into the clutches of Hadjar on softs. Red Bull debated swapping positions, but the pit wall held station.

Meanwhile, Antonelli launched a brilliant recovery drive. From 16th, he fought hard and finished fifth, limiting the damage in the championship. This performance highlighted his quality as a young driver who never gives up.

Russell's victory in Baku was not just about speed, but also strategy and composure. He managed his tyres well, maintained his rhythm, and stayed focused despite relentless pressure. Verstappen had to settle for second after failing to capitalise on the restart. This result intensifies the title fight, with Russell continuing to close the points gap in the drivers' standings.

For Mercedes, this is a huge morale boost. They were not only strong in qualifying but also able to convert it into a win. Meanwhile, Red Bull must evaluate their strategy, especially in managing two closely competing drivers. The next race will be a test for both teams to maintain consistency.
