George Russell has finally spoken out about the dominance of his Mercedes teammate, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, conceding that the 2026 drivers' championship is now out of his reach. Following the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid, the British driver stated he is no longer in the title fight. "I'm not delusional. The reality is my teammate has done a much better job than me this year," George Russell told Sky Sports F1. "He thoroughly deserves to lead the standings and be where he is. I'm not in the fight for the drivers' championship anymore."

The statement came after Andrea Kimi Antonelli once again beat Russell at the Spanish GP on September 13, 2026. The 20-year-old Italian finished P1, while Russell had to settle for P5. Antonelli now leads the standings with 8 wins this season, compared to Russell's 2. With a points gap of +66, Russell is realistic: his focus has shifted to helping Mercedes secure the constructors' title.

Mental Strain Throughout the Season

Russell's frustration is nothing new. Throughout the 2026 season, he admitted to regularly consulting a sports psychologist to maintain his composure amid internal pressure at Mercedes. The ever-widening points gap to Antonelli has only added to his mental burden. "I have to keep my mind sane," he said in a separate interview. "It's not just about speed, but mental strength."

Additionally, the characteristics of the Mercedes W17 this season are said to not suit Russell's smooth driving style. He was forced to change his approach mid-season to match Antonelli's aggressive pace. "I had to adapt to a car that didn't suit my natural style," Russell admitted. "It's a big challenge, but I had no choice."

The lowest point for Russell came at the Italian GP, where he started from the front row but had to watch Antonelli make a stunning comeback from 19th to win. "That was one of the hardest moments of my career," Russell recalled. "When you've done everything right but still lose, it hurts deeply."

With the remaining races this season, Russell's admission is a clear signal for Toto Wolff to designate Antonelli as Mercedes' number one driver. Russell seems resigned and ready to fully support the team's bid for the constructors' championship. "I'll do anything to help the team," he asserted. "The constructors' title is our main target now."
