A major development has unfolded within the Haas garage ahead of the crucial sessions as Esteban Ocon has been ruled out from participating in the remainder of the weekend's events at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. This sudden decision immediately reshapes the American-owned team's lineup from the third free practice session onward.
To address the unexpected situation, team management has called upon Ryo Hirakawa to take over the VF-26 charger. This announcement marks a monumental milestone for the Japanese driver, as he is set to make his official Formula 1 race debut during the 71-lap grand prix weekend.
The team released an official statement addressing the sudden driver change without elaborating on the specific reasons behind Ocon's absence. “TGR Haas F1 Team reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa will replace Esteban Ocon for the remainder of the weekend’s Mexico City Grand Prix,” the statement read.

The official communication further outlined the schedule and context of the substitution. “Ryo participated in FP1 at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez on Friday, his third free practice outing of the season driving the VF-26, finishing 15th overall. The Japanese driver will partner teammate Ollie Bearman through final practice and qualifying on Saturday and Sunday’s 71-lap grand prix – marking Ryo's Formula 1 race debut. No further statements will be made at this time.”
Prior to this unexpected shift, Hirakawa had completed Free Practice 1 on Friday in 15th position before handing the car back to Ocon for Free Practice 2, where the French racer finished 13th overall.
With Ocon already confirmed to part ways with Haas ahead of the upcoming championship cycle, this sudden replacement adds considerable intrigue to the final stretch of races for the current season.
