Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Max Verstappen and Oracle Red Bull Racing introduced a significant upgrade package on the RB22 at the 2026 Japanese Grand Prix, featuring a revised bodywork concept, floor updates, and changes to the rear brake duct system aimed at expanding the car’s performance window.

New Direction in Sidepod Design

Red Bull has now deployed its third sidepod concept of the season, following earlier iterations seen during pre-season testing and the opening rounds. The latest version represents a clear shift in philosophy, adopting a downsloping rear profile instead of the overhang solution used previously.

This change alters not only the sidepod geometry but also the aerodynamic behaviour of surrounding surfaces, including the engine cover and floor. The revised layout is expected to improve airflow management toward the rear of the car.

In addition, the sidepod inlet has been reshaped and slightly narrowed. The outer profile of the inlet has been adjusted accordingly, while internal structures within the inlet have also been modified. These changes directly influence the undercut geometry and the so-called G-line airflow path.

Undercut and Airflow Optimisation

The modification to the inlet has led to a clear reshaping of the undercut. The transition area between the sidepod and floor now presents a different geometry, allowing for cleaner airflow toward the underfloor region.

This also impacts the G-line, which plays a critical role in guiding airflow along the car’s side toward the diffuser. With the updated configuration, Red Bull aims to enhance airflow efficiency while reducing turbulence in key aerodynamic zones.

Floor and Fence Development

The RB22 floor has also undergone further development, building on an already distinctive concept compared to the rest of the grid. Red Bull utilises a facade along the leading edge of the floor, onto which the fences are mounted.

This facade stops short of the chassis and bib section, allowing airflow to pass underneath more effectively. In the updated version, the four primary fence roots now feature clusters of smaller branches, acting as vortex-shedding surfaces.

These additions are designed to better manage airflow structures under the car, improving stability and enhancing the effectiveness of the diffuser.

Rear Brake Duct Revisions

Red Bull has also introduced revised rear brake duct inlet and outlet geometries for Suzuka. The changes are tailored to the circuit’s high braking energy demands, ensuring adequate cooling performance.

Beyond thermal management, the brake duct design also plays a role in aerodynamic efficiency around the rear wheel area, which is highly sensitive to airflow disruption.

According to the team’s technical documentation, these adjustments were made to accommodate braking material requirements specific to Suzuka’s layout.

Performance Implications

This upgrade package reflects a notable shift in Red Bull’s aerodynamic direction. By combining a new sidepod concept, floor refinements, and brake cooling adjustments, the team is targeting improved consistency across varying track conditions.

The development also highlights that the RB22 remains in an aggressive evolution phase, as Red Bull continues to explore solutions to address early-season performance limitations.

As the 2026 season progresses, the effectiveness of this package will be closely monitored, particularly in determining whether Red Bull can re-establish itself as a front-running contender against its key rivals.
