The Formula 1 driver market speculation has intensified further as George Russell confirmed that Mercedes reserve driver Frederik Vesti is actively targeting a race seat with Cadillac for the upcoming 2027 season. The young Dane recently turned heads during a strong opening practice session at the Mexico City Grand Prix weekend.
Taking to the track for his third FP1 outing of the year with the Silver Arrows, Vesti stepped into Russell’s car for the very first time after previously deputising for Andrea Kimi Antonelli in Barcelona and Hungary. He delivered an impressive performance by clocking the third-fastest time, finishing less than a tenth of a second behind the Italian title leader.
Beyond his simulator and reserve duties in Brackley, the 24-year-old already has established ties with the American manufacturer, having secured a full-time seat in the IMSA series alongside Earl Bamber and Jack Aitken for the #31 car next year. Meanwhile, the brand's nascent F1 project remains the center of intense paddock speculation regarding its future driver lineup.

With third driver Colton Herta also making an FP1 appearance and rumored to be in contention should the team make changes to their current roster, Vesti admitted during media appearances that he is firmly in the hunt for a starting berth. The young contender made no secret of his intentions to step up to the pinnacle of motorsport.
Backing his fellow driver's ambitions, Russell emphasized in the media pen that his colleague thoroughly deserves an opportunity to showcase his talent on the main grid. "I think he deserves his chance, he's put a lot of effort in working with our team and we all respect him very highly," Russell stated when discussing the impressive practice run.
