Max Verstappen secured his tenth podium finish of the 2026 Formula 1 season in Austin, marking his sixth in succession since his crash at Zandvoort. While it stands as an impressive statistic, it did little to satisfy the reigning world champion at the Circuit of the Americas.
On Saturday, the raw pace appeared sufficient to fight for pole position, judging by Verstappen's impressive lap time in Q2. However, he inexplicably lost grip during the crucial Q3 session. Based on preceding practice runs, his race pace still looked strong enough to contend for the win, but according to the driver, far too many small issues derailed their race.
Frustration stemmed partly from persistent troubles that have plagued Red Bull Racing for some time, and partly from race-specific strategy decisions that ultimately backfired. The team's choice to rely on softer compounds proved ineffective as they failed to adapt to competitors finding substantial grip on harder tires, disrupting their usual stint order.

Radio communication failures and consistently poor race starts continued to haunt the team throughout the weekend. Highlighting the communication breakdown, Verstappen jokingly remarked that the team might as well resort to sign language given the recurring radio glitches inside the cockpit.
Team principal Laurent Mekies openly admitted that their tyre management approach completely missed the mark in Austin, contrasting sharply with their recent strengths. With crucial data now gathered, the Milton Keynes squad faces an urgent task to rectify these recurring technical gremlins.
