Oscar Piastri endured a bitter Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The McLaren driver finished 14th after finding himself in the Turn 1 run-off, squandering a golden podium opportunity. A small error with massive consequences.
Starting from the second row after a brilliant third in qualifying, Piastri was on the attack. He held off pressure from Max Verstappen before eventually succumbing. But his hopes vanished when he locked up the front tyres while defending from Isack Hadjar. The car spun into the run-off, and the race took a dramatic turn.
“It’s a real shame, it didn’t go as we hoped,” Piastri said after the race. “We had the pace for the podium and were in the ideal position. The first stint was very positive, but in the second the medium tyres didn’t give the same feel. The lock-up at Turn 1 put us at the back with damaged tyres, severely limiting our recovery.”
McLaren had arrived in Baku with high hopes. Lando Norris also had pace, but he had to watch from the sidelines after an incident with Franco Colapinto. Both orange cars failed to finish as expected. A heavy blow for a team fighting at the top.
For Piastri, it’s a valuable lesson. “Beyond the result, it was a very positive weekend for me. I learned a lot and feel more comfortable exploiting the car’s potential. We’ll analyse what happened, turn the page, and focus on Malaysia. Let’s see what we can do there,” he added.
The Baku failure leaves McLaren further adrift in the title race. Max Verstappen, dominant as ever, tightens his grip on the championship. Meanwhile, Piastri drops down the order. Malaysia will be a mental test for the team and driver.
With the season winding down, every point counts. McLaren cannot afford another mistake if they want to keep their title hopes alive. Piastri must stay calm in crucial moments. We await their performance in Sepang.
