Oscar Piastri's Italian Grand Prix weekend took a bitter turn as he lost his third-place grid spot at Monza after being handed a three-place penalty for impeding Liam Lawson during qualifying.
The incident unfolded in the closing stages of Q2 when Piastri emerged from the pit lane just as Lawson was on a fast lap, desperately trying to escape the elimination zone. Lawson, who had teammate Max Verstappen ahead for a tow, immediately vented his frustration over the radio after encountering Piastri at the first chicane.
Piastri slowed and moved aside for Verstappen once he realized the Red Bull was on a push lap, but he couldn't avoid compromising Lawson directly behind. The New Zealander lost valuable time, was eliminated in 14th, and will also start from the back after Red Bull fitted new power unit components.
For Piastri, the penalty drops him from third to sixth on the grid, promoting Charles Leclerc, Lewis Hamilton, and Verstappen one place each for Sunday's race. It tarnishes what had been his equal-best qualifying performance of the season, matching his third place at the Japanese Grand Prix.
Piastri's Honest Confession to the Stewards
Piastri admitted the situation was beyond his control. "I was coming out of the pits and, I mean, the speed difference out of the pits is so big here. So, yeah, don't really know where he came from. I need to review it with the team," he said.
The stewards accepted that Piastri had been warned about Verstappen and Lawson approaching, but not that they were on flying laps. They ruled that Piastri "inadvertently and unnecessarily" impeded Lawson.
Despite the setback, Piastri felt McLaren had performed better than expected at a track where straight-line speed has been a weakness. "I think today was incredibly close between a lot of different teams," he noted.
McLaren's Fight Back Amid Red Bull Dominance
Qualifying also highlighted the intense battle at the front. Pierre Gasly shocked the field by taking pole for Alpine, while Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton were the beneficiaries of Piastri's penalty.
With the penalty, McLaren's podium hopes at Monza have become more challenging. However, Piastri remains optimistic. "We have a competitive package. Hopefully we can perform at our best," he concluded.
