Formula 1, Sportrik Media – 1996 Formula 1 world champion Damon Hill believes Oscar Piastri must change his approach at McLaren if he wants to become a future world champion, following a season marked by difficult team decisions involving Lando Norris.

Throughout the 2025 campaign, McLaren insisted it was giving equal opportunities to both drivers, but that policy came under scrutiny at the Italian Grand Prix when Piastri was ordered to give back a position to Norris after his team mate lost time with a slow pit stop.

That call had a direct impact on Piastri’s title ambitions, which suffered another major blow at the Qatar Grand Prix when both he and Norris were disqualified for excessive plank wear, a moment Hill described as the low point of Piastri’s season.

Speaking on the Drive To Wynn podcast, Hill argued that McLaren’s attempts to be fair ultimately worked against Piastri. He highlighted the Monza decision as a clear example of how crucial championship points were handed to a direct rival in the title fight.

Norris eventually went on to win the world championship after fending off a late challenge from Max Verstappen, reinforcing Hill’s view that every strategic call during the season carried enormous weight in the final outcome.

Looking ahead, Hill believes Piastri must be prepared to put his own interests first. He warned that being too accommodating in such situations can be the difference between winning and losing a title in modern Formula 1, where margins are extremely fine at https://sportrik.com/en.
