Oscar Piastri Penalized, McLaren Loses Third on Grid at Monza

Oscar Piastri has been handed a three-place grid penalty for impeding Liam Lawson during qualifying for the Italian Grand Prix. The decision reshuffles the starting order and stirs debate in the Monza paddock.

The McLaren driver had looked set to start third after a strong performance, but the Q2 incident with Lawson has undone that result.

How the Incident Unfolded

Lawson, on his final Q2 run, had left the pits early with Max Verstappen to secure a tow on Monza's long straights. But approaching Turn 1, Piastri was rejoining the circuit and blocked Lawson's line.

Lawson was forced to back off and failed to improve, getting eliminated at the chequered flag. The stewards investigated and imposed the penalty on Piastri.

Stewards' Verdict and Strategic Impact

In their ruling, the stewards noted that Piastri was not warned that Verstappen and Lawson were on push laps. His team only informed him that both had just crossed the line.

Piastri stated he only realized Verstappen was pushing as he approached Turn 1. He slowed and stayed right to let Verstappen pass but could not avoid impeding Lawson close behind.

The stewards accepted that Piastri had no other option in that moment, deeming the incident unintentional. Still, the standard three-place grid penalty was applied.

This is a heavy blow for Oscar Piastri, who now drops to sixth on the grid, while Liam Lawson remains eliminated in Q2.

As a result, McLaren loses a prime opportunity to start from the front row, forcing a strategic rethink for a race where overtaking is notoriously difficult.
