Esteban Ocon has officially opened the door to leaving Haas. During the media day ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku, the French driver declared himself a free agent for the 2027 season. The statement immediately intensified the Formula 1 driver market, which still has several seats available for next year.
Ocon made his stance clear when speaking to reporters in the Baku paddock. “I consider myself a free agent for 2027,” he said briefly. It was far from a throwaway line. Ocon’s contract with Haas expires at the end of 2026, and he appears to be actively exploring options to keep his F1 career alive.
His ambition to remain at the pinnacle of motorsport is unmistakable. Ocon stressed that his achievements so far have not left him satisfied. “I’m 30 years old, I’ve been in F1 for 10 years, but I still have a lot to give. Winning one race and scoring a couple of podiums doesn’t satisfy me,” he asserted. “I’ve done almost 200 races, but I’m not happy with what I’ve achieved. When I see my colleagues fighting for pole positions, that’s where I want to be.”
Ocon’s seat at Haas has indeed been under scrutiny. His position is reportedly coveted by a number of young drivers, including Italy’s Leonardo Fornaroli and Brazil’s Rafael Camara. The Haas management, led by Ayao Komatsu, has yet to make a final decision on their 2027 lineup. This uncertainty only encourages Ocon to explore opportunities elsewhere.
On the other side of the garage, Oliver Bearman is sending the opposite signal. The young Briton has effectively confirmed he will stay with Haas through 2027. “The final decision isn’t mine, but I’m ready to stay with Haas next year. I think that’s how it will end up, and honestly it’s a good result because it would be our third year together,” Bearman said.
Bearman’s confidence is well-founded. As a Ferrari academy driver, he has shown rapid progress and is viewed as a long-term asset for Haas. Meanwhile, Ocon, a seasoned veteran, must fight hard to retain his place. The contrast between the two highlights Haas’s apparent preference for youth.
For Ocon, becoming a free agent is a strategy to stay relevant in the driver market. With nearly 200 race starts and a victory at the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix, he still has value. However, he faces competition from many other names eyeing seats at top and midfield teams. Teams like Sauber and Alpine are reportedly monitoring the situation.
What’s clear is that Ocon’s statement in Baku has added another layer of intrigue to the F1 driver market ahead of 2027. Haas faces a tough choice: retain Ocon’s experience or make way for the new generation. Ocon himself has sent a clear message that he is not done with F1 yet. The ball is now in the court of teams still looking for drivers for next season.
