Lando Norris described himself as "insanely unlucky" after a mistimed pit stop cost him the race lead in the Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix, converting a dominant run at the front into a P3 finish. The Brit started from pole position at the Madring and held the lead despite a poor getaway, but a Virtual Safety Car (VSC) called just after he entered the pits changed everything.
When Norris took his tyre stop on Lap 16, the VSC was deployed for Lance Stroll's stopped Aston Martin. Crucially, Norris had already entered the pits five seconds earlier, denying him the time advantage others gained. "I was the only one on the whole grid that didn't get the chance to do the pit stop," he told media including Motorsport Week. "That's just unfortunate."
The frustration was sharpened by his impressive form all weekend. "It's frustrating, especially after the performance yesterday and at the beginning of the race," he said. "I feel like I deserve more today, but the others also did a good race." He insisted the incident was neither his nor the team's fault. "How was I meant to know? The pit wall may have been able to warn me, but I didn't speak to the pit wall. I'm just driving the car."
The tyre strategy also came under scrutiny. Norris revealed the Medium tyre was destroyed while the Hard was amazing. "The Medium tyre was destroyed, the Hard tyre was amazing," he explained. "But the pace was very, very strong, and on the Hard tyre, I think they were stunning." Nevertheless, he had to settle for third behind Andrea Kimi Antonelli and Max Verstappen.
This incident adds to Norris's streak of bad luck in 2026. Despite consistent speed, he has often lost maximum results due to external factors. Now, he must focus on the next race to keep his championship hopes alive. "It's racing, but never when fighting for a win. I think it's probably one of the first times a win has been lost simply because of it," he concluded.
