The historical tensions between Adrian Newey and Christian Horner have resurfaced following the release of the Red Bull boss's new autobiography. The mastermind behind countless Formula 1 championship successes has broken his silence regarding claims made in the book titled Drive, which alleged that the legendary designer attempted to jump ship during the difficult 2014 hybrid power unit transition.
This captivating subject dominated the team principals' press conference in Austin, where Sky Sports journalist Craig Slater confronted the technical guru about passages written by his long-time collaborative partner of nearly two0 years. While Horner included warm remarks in his publication, he also emphasized the brilliant former McLaren and Williams engineer's supposed willingness to abandon the squad at the first sign of trouble when Mercedes overtook them.
Responding directly to these assertions, the current leading figure at Aston Martin offered a sharp and transparent perspective on the reality inside the Milton Keynes factory back in 2014. He underlined how a struggling engine supplier failing to show a proactive attitude toward fixing fundamental issues created an exceptionally demoralizing environment for a championship-winning chassis department.

"I haven't read anything yet, but as far as 2014 is concerned, if you are a chassis designer and the power unit supplier goes through a bad year, it is something that can happen and that you accept. But if the supplier has a bad year and doesn't seem to have any intention of solving the problem, then the situation changes completely and becomes rather bleak," Newey stated.
The aerodynamic genius stressed that this agonizing phase persisted until the team finally secured a partnership with Honda ahead of the 2019 season. The profound distress and professional frustration experienced during those barren years were apparently misjudged by management, despite numerous private discussions held at the time.
"That is exactly what, unfortunately, we had to deal with in 2014. And, as it turned out, the situation with that supplier didn't really change until the switch to Honda, in 2019. You can therefore imagine my pain and frustration, perhaps Christian didn't fully understand it, despite the fact we had discussed it," he added.
Despite the media storm generated by the memoir's revelations, both central figures maintain that their personal relationship remains solid away from the pressures of the F1 paddock. Newey concluded by reassuring fans that their longstanding bond is unaffected by the published recollections.
"For the rest, I have no comments to make. Christian and I remain friends. As many of you know, I am the godfather of his daughter Olivia," he concluded. Read our in-depth analysis and stay updated with the latest paddock news right here.
