Lando Norris kicked off his Spanish Grand Prix weekend in disastrous fashion. The McLaren driver was forced to sit out almost the entire second free practice session (FP2) due to a gearbox problem that left him stranded in the garage. This is a significant blow for the reigning champion as he fights to maintain momentum in a tightly contested season.
In FP1, Norris had already shown signs of struggle. He could only manage sixth place, over eight tenths off the fastest time set by George Russell. The new and challenging Madring circuit demands quick adaptation, but the technical issue in FP2 severely hampered Norris' preparations.
McLaren later released an official statement that they had found a problem with the gearbox on Norris' MCL40 and had to replace it. “We identified an issue on Lando's car, which requires a gearbox change. We are working to try and get Lando back out before the end of the session, although time is very tight,” said a representative of the team led by Andrea Stella. The mechanics worked hard, but Norris did not return to the track before the session ended.
Losing an hour of valuable track time at a new circuit like Madring could have a major impact on Norris' performance throughout the weekend. He not only missed the chance to gather data for the race but also fell behind in car setup. While rivals like Max Verstappen, Mercedes, and Ferrari completed their practice programs, Norris will have to start from scratch in FP3.
McLaren itself is under pressure to compete at the front. The MCL40 is competitive this season, but reliability issues like this can be a boomerang in the title fight. Norris, who currently leads the drivers' standings, certainly does not want to lose valuable points due to a technical problem.
With limited time before qualifying, the McLaren team must work extra hard to ensure Norris' car is competitive again. If not, Norris may struggle to secure a good starting position, ultimately affecting his chances of a strong result at the Spanish Grand Prix.
We will wait and see if Norris can bounce back and deliver his best performance in the remaining sessions. One thing is certain: the pressure is mounting on the papaya team to keep their championship hopes alive.
