Lando Norris and Max Verstappen could be on the verge of a new chapter in their racing careers. With the release of the 2027 Formula 1 calendar, the door seems open for grand prix drivers to compete in the Le Mans 24 Hours. But is the path truly clear? Several obstacles remain before they can tackle the Circuit de la Sarthe.
The newly announced 2027 F1 calendar avoids a clash with the Le Mans 24 Hours, scheduled for 12-13 June 2027. Moreover, the F1 races around that date, Monaco and Portugal, provide a comfortable one-week gap. Logistically, traveling between the three events is straightforward. Yet, even without a clash, the road to Le Mans is far from smooth.
Mandatory Test Day for Rookies
One crucial requirement is the Le Mans test day on 6 June 2027, which unfortunately coincides with the Monaco Grand Prix. For rookies, participation in the test day is mandatory. They must complete at least 10 laps, including five timed laps, around Circuit de la Sarthe to be eligible for the race.
The ACO and FIA are unlikely to adjust the WEC schedule to accommodate a single F1 driver. Unlike the NLS, which changed its date for Verstappen, Le Mans has strict regulations. However, there is a loophole: a Platinum-rated driver competing in another major championship can apply to the ACO Sport Committee for an exemption from the test day. If granted, they must complete the mandatory laps during Wednesday practice.
Precedents exist. In 2021, Robin Frijns was allowed to skip the test day due to Formula E commitments, despite being a rookie. Similarly, Nolan Siegel and Kyffin Simpson missed the 2024 test while racing in IndyCar. So, in theory, Norris or Verstappen could request a similar exemption. But the final decision rests with the ACO.
Logistics and Dual Commitments
Completing both the test day and the Monaco GP is logistically possible. With a private jet, a driver could fly from Monaco to Le Mans and back. However, it's not without risk. Physical and mental fatigue could impact performance in both events. Additionally, the Wednesday practice session at Le Mans would be intense as they scramble to make up laps.
Furthermore, there's the matter of team permission. Top teams like McLaren and Red Bull would not want their star drivers exhausted or injured before an F1 race. Contracts and insurance could also be barriers. So, while regulations allow it, team approval is key.
If it happens, it would be a rare moment. The last active F1 driver to race at Le Mans was Nico Hulkenberg in 2015, and he won with Porsche. The presence of Norris or Verstappen would draw massive attention, given their popularity. Le Mans 2027 could become a dream stage for fans eager to see cross-discipline battles.
However, all remains speculative. What's clear is that the 2027 F1 calendar offers a glimmer of hope. It's up to Norris, Verstappen, and their teams to seize the opportunity. Are they ready for the extra challenge? Time will tell.
