The driver market grid for the upcoming Formula 1 season intensifies further as Nikola Tsolov is set to take over the VCARB 03 cockpit from Liam Lawson during the opening practice session at the Mexico City Grand Prix. This crucial moment marks the 19-year-old Bulgarian driver's first-ever appearance during an official F1 grand prix weekend. The opportunity arises while the Racing Bulls squad carefully evaluates its driver pairing options for the 2027 championship campaign.
As it stands, neither Lawson nor his rookie teammate has received official confirmation regarding their seats for the 2027 season. Tsolov has been strongly linked with a potential promotion to the pinnacle of motorsport after establishing himself as a formidable title contender in Formula 2 with Campos Racing. The young talent currently sits second in the drivers' standings, trailing championship leader Rafael Camara by just seven points with only two rounds remaining on the calendar.
Prior to his official practice debut, Tsolov already gained valuable cockpit experience by driving for Racing Bulls during a private test session at Imola back in August. Over the course of that private outing, he completed an impressive 143 laps in the team's car, building a solid foundation ahead of his official grand prix weekend appearance. His rise through the ranks has been steady since joining the Red Bull Junior Team in 2025 following an impressive runner-up campaign in Formula 3.

Looking ahead to his track appearance, Tsolov expressed great enthusiasm about taking this next step and utilizing his previous simulator and testing mileage. Following his test with the team at Imola, he stated that he is excited to build on that experience, learn more about the current technical regulations, and maximize track time. His primary focus remains on working closely with engineers and providing valuable feedback to support the team's overall weekend program.
Racing Bulls management emphasized that fielding the young charger fulfills mandatory rookie practice requirements while reinforcing the team's dedication to nurturing emerging talents within the Red Bull junior system. Meanwhile, Lawson continues to prove his worth on track, holding ninth in the drivers' standings and leading the midfield charge as the squad chases a historic top-five constructors' finish.
