Manu Gonzalez returned to winning ways in the Moto2 San Marino Grand Prix at Misano, capitalizing on a first-lap collision triggered by Angel Piqueras that eliminated several front-runners. Gonzalez, who had not won since Balaton Park, took full advantage of the chaos to secure a crucial victory.
The incident occurred at the Variante del Parco when Piqueras misjudged his braking, collecting pole-sitter Senna Agius and Dani Holgado. All three were out on the spot, while Gonzalez, starting from the second row, skillfully avoided the carnage and inherited the lead.
“I saw it all happen in front of me. I just tried to stay calm and avoid contact,” said Gonzalez after the race. “The team has worked so hard, and this win is for them.”
Collin Veijer kept the pressure on, but Gonzalez managed the gap perfectly. Barry Baltus, who showed strong pace, had to settle for third after a long lap penalty disrupted his rhythm. Meanwhile, Tony Arbolino and Celestino Vietti charged through the field to finish fifth and seventh, respectively.
The result tightens the championship battle: Gonzalez now leads the standings, with Guevara, who finished sixth, losing ground. With ten races remaining, every point will be vital.
Moto2 returns at the next Grand Prix, where Gonzalez will aim to maintain momentum while his rivals look to close the gap.
