Alex Marquez clinched a dramatic pole position for the 2026 Malaysia MotoGP weekend after delivering a stunning late flyer to edge out his brother Marc Marquez in a tense qualifying session at Sepang. The Gresini rider mastered one of his most successful circuits to secure the top spot in a fiercely contested battle.
This achievement makes Marquez the ninth different polesitter of the 2026 season, setting a blistering benchmark of 1:56.493s. The qualifying battle on track saw five different riders top the session at various stages, before the younger Marquez staged a brilliant comeback in the closing moments to snatch his first pole position since the 2025 Catalan Grand Prix.
All eyes were previously fixed on the Aprilia garage to see whether Jorge Martin would attempt to participate in qualifying. However, following discussions with MotoGP medical director Dr. Angel Charte before the session commenced, it was officially decided that Martin would withdraw from the remainder of the weekend due to his lingering injuries.

Back on the track, Marc Marquez had to settle for second place after temporarily setting the pace, expertly towing Pedro Acosta across the line to help the KTM rider secure the final spot on the front row in third. Meanwhile, the remaining Aprilia contenders were pushed down the order as the session reached its climax.
Ai Ogura narrowly missed the front row in fourth, just 0.124s off the pole time, with Marco Bezzecchi rounding out the top five. With the grid tightly packed and intense battles expected throughout the field, Sunday's Grand Prix promises high-octane drama at the Sepang International Circuit.
