A dramatic turn of events at Motegi saw Michelin pull the soft rear compound from the Japanese Grand Prix weekend following severe blistering and chunking issues during the Sprint race.
The newly laid tarmac offered incredible grip but triggered extreme thermal stress, leaving the rear tyres of several riders—most notably Pecco Bagnaia—severely destroyed by the checkered flag.
Michelin's motorsport boss Piero Taramasso admitted the high temperatures were anticipated, prompting the manufacturer to bring an alternative heavy-duty specification. Out of an abundance of caution, the soft option has been completely discarded for Sunday's main event.

Teams must now pivot toward the medium or strongly recommended hard compound to safely navigate the race distance under Dorna supervision without risking structural failures.
