Michelin Takes Tough Tyre Call After Motegi MotoGP Sprint Chaos

Tyre drama has taken center stage in the paddock as Francesco Bagnaia and several other riders were met with an alarming sight in their garages after the Motegi Sprint race, where rear tires showed extreme degradation and chunks missing from the rubber.

The newly laid asphalt at the Japanese venue has undoubtedly delivered incredible grip and blistering lap times throughout the weekend. Yet, that extra performance came with a heavy price tag, generating massive thermal stress that triggered severe blistering followed by aggressive chunking under high track temperatures.

Michelin's motorsport boss Piero Taramasso admitted that the dramatic tyre wear did not come as a total surprise to their engineering team. Anticipating such challenges ahead of the grand prix weekend, the manufacturer had already brought a third tyre specification featuring a special casing combined with a soft compound.

Following the harrowing images from the Sprint involving the star rider of Ducati, a joint decision was swiftly made alongside Dorna to ban the soft rear compound entirely for Sunday's main event as a strict precautionary measure to ensure rider safety.

Taramasso strongly urged all teams and riders to switch to the hard rear compound for the grand prix. He emphasized that utilizing the hard option is the only guaranteed way to push flat-out from lights out to the checkered flag without risking catastrophic rubber failure.
