McLaren: Best Drivers Still Matter Under F1 2026 Rules

McLaren insists that driver talent remains a key differentiator amid the software-heavy F1 2026 regulations. Despite widespread criticism from drivers about electronic control systems, last year's constructors' champions are confident that skill still counts.

Complaints have rumbled on since before the season started, intensifying at 'energy-starved' circuits where the corner-to-straight ratio hampers the new-generation cars' battery recharging. A regulation tweak before the Miami Grand Prix reduced the much-criticised 'yo-yo racing', but speed differences caused by self-learning algorithms reacting to track conditions still cause angst. At Spa, Oscar Piastri called it "a pretty crap way of going racing".

The situation won't change imminently, even though some argue for banning machine-learning tools entirely, citing F1's sporting regulations that state "the driver must drive the car alone and unaided". However, McLaren's technical director for engineering, Neil Houldey, believes the best drivers will adapt to these new challenges.

"Actually the drivers who understand what they need to do, the ones who are switched on, the ones who are the best F1 drivers in the world are the ones who are still going to be the fastest," Houldey told Motorsport.com. "It may have changed in terms of... It's not all about top speed, it's about the thought processes going on in the background that generate that lap time."

He cited Spa as an example, where Piastri had a slightly different deployment schedule, losing a couple of tenths but staying with Lando Norris. "I think those things balance out. You still see the difference between the good drivers and the less good drivers in the overall lap time and then in the race as well," he added.

Fundamentally, the limitation of the current ruleset, with its near-50:50 split of electrical deployment, is the amount of energy the car can store. Since the battery must be recharged throughout the lap, software intervention is required for safety and performance. Machine-learning software also helps find the "optimal lap" with the best harvesting and deployment combinations.

Houldey views it as a different order of risk and reward, where aggression carries fewer rewards than a cerebral approach. "It's definitely more of a thinking game," he said. "There's definitely a lot more going on for the drivers than there was. Now it's that extra bit, and you've got to get not only your cornering speeds right, but the way you deploy your energy, your throttle position, absolutely right as well."

Thus, the best combination of car, driver, and engineering team will still prevail. Despite increased technical challenges, Houldey is confident that the best drivers will end up in the best place at season's end.
