Tensions flared in the Formula 1 paddock as Max Verstappen delivered a scathing critique of Liam Lawson following their high-profile clash during the second practice session at the Mexican Grand Prix. The wheel-to-wheel drama unfolded through the iconic stadium section at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, scattering debris across the circuit and forcing a brief red flag stoppage.

The confrontation erupted 15 minutes into the session when Verstappen lunged down the inside at Turn 12, prompting Lawson to retaliate with a similar aggressive move into the subsequent corner. The resulting contact forced the four-time world champion off the track and left his machine carrying notable aerodynamic and floor damage, severely hindering his running for the rest of the afternoon.

Reflecting on the incident in the media pen, Verstappen did not mince words regarding the rookie's approach on track. "Well I don't think it's called unlucky. Maybe not very smart behaviour, what he was trying to do there. At the end of the day it's not going to change my weekend, but if I would be him, I would act a little bit smarter. Also when you're fighting for your seat it's not very smart behaviour," Verstappen told broadcasters.

The subsequent handling issues relegated Verstappen to fifth place in the timing sheets, 0.311s adrift of pace-setter Charles Leclerc. Racing Bulls team boss Laurent Mekies acknowledged the setback to Sky Sports Germany, noting, "Max had a bit of a disturbed session obviously with the contact with Liam. So quite a bit of car damage there, so it's a bit of a shame because obviously we had to carry on like that with the car."

Meanwhile, Lawson managed to salvage ninth overall, 0.628s shy of the benchmark time as he continues his quest to secure a permanent 2027 grid spot amid intense junior team competition. Mekies emphasized that the avoidable collision occurred when neither driver was on a fast lap, making the contact entirely unnecessary. Both squads now face a busy evening repairing the damage ahead of Saturday's crucial action.
