It was a chaotic and drama-filled second practice session at the 2026 Formula 1 Mexico City Grand Prix, as Lewis Hamilton suffered a sudden power failure and parked his car trackside, while his teammate Charles Leclerc once again set the benchmark pace for the second consecutive session.
Hamilton's trouble unfolded midway through the afternoon when his power unit failed heading through Turn 13. Reporting the issue over team radio, the British driver stated, "Something is wrong with the power, I lost all power through Turn 13." His race engineer immediately instructed him to pull over, bringing out a brief Virtual Safety Car period and cutting his running short.
At the sharp end of the timesheets, Leclerc secured the fastest lap with a 1m 17.827s. Lando Norris pushed hard to finish just 0.103s behind in second place, with George Russell slotted tightly into third position, a mere 0.003s further adrift in a fiercely competitive field.

The session was disrupted right from the outset with multiple teams encountering early setbacks. Both Haas machines hit trouble as Esteban Ocon reported steering issues, while Oliver Bearman went off track at Turn 3 due to a software glitch before returning to action. Audi faced an even graver hurdle when a fluid leak was detected on Gabriel Bortoleto’s car prior to the session getting underway.
Tensions boiled over later on track when Max Verstappen and Liam Lawson made wheel-to-wheel contact approaching Turn 15, bringing out the red flags to clear debris. Lawson fumed over the radio that Verstappen drove straight into him, leaving both drivers with potential aerodynamic damage as they continued their respective garage programs.
