TO NEWS OVERVIEW
Verstappen beat his old F1 rival Hamilton to win the sprint

The Marina Bay Street Circuit delivered high drama as Max Verstappen triumphed in a rain-soaked sprint race during the 2026 Formula 1 season. The reigning world champion initially lost his lead off the line before capitalizing on a chaotic wet-weather race filled with high-profile incidents.

The start of the event was delayed by 30 minutes due to a severe thunderstorm lashing the iconic street circuit. When the lights finally went out, Verstappen dropped behind before George Russell crashed out on the main straight on the second lap, eliminating the Mercedes driver from contention and bringing out the safety car.

Verstappen expertly managed the subsequent restart, clearing the stricken Mercedes and immediately pulling away from the chasing pack to secure a dominant victory. His flawless drive added another win to his impressive momentum following his grand prix success in Malaysia just a week prior.

Further back, Lewis Hamilton delivered a stellar start from sixth on the grid to climb into podium contention. Although he briefly shadowed the race leader in the early stages, the seven-time world champion ultimately lacked the pace to challenge for the top step of the podium.

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc fended off a fierce charge from Andrea Kimi Antonelli to claim the final podium spot after reporting that his intermediate tyres were completely destroyed. Antonelli's fourth-place finish extended his championship lead to 89 points following his teammate's early retirement.

Late-race chaos also struck Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, as a final-lap collision forced Piastri into retirement and capped off a turbulent 20-lap sprint race.
