The Pertamina Grand Prix of Indonesia weekend turned into a nightmare for several lightweight class competitors after race control handed down severe sanctions. No fewer than eight riders faced strict penalties following a chaotic qualifying session at the Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit.

The recurring issue of riders crawling slowly around the track to hunt for a tow reared its head once again. Competitors routinely wait for a fast rival to pass so they can latch onto their slipstream, prompting marshals to crack down heavily on such dangerous practices.

The harshest punishments of a twelve-place grid drop went to five individuals after they exceeded 135 percent of their personal best sector times in multiple zones. This group included Scott Ogden, Zen Mitani, Ruche Moodley, Eddie O’Shea, and Leo Rammerstorfer, all of whom committed their second offense of the season.

Consequently, the official starting lineup underwent a drastic shake-up, severely damaging the race strategy of the affected teams. Ogden was pushed back to 21st place on the grid, while his penalized peers lined up further down the order alongside additional sanctions handed to David Munoz.
