Jorge Martin won the MotoGP Austrian Sprint at the Red Bull Ring after runaway leader Pedro Acosta crashed out with just three laps to go. The victory also reclaimed Martin's championship lead from rival Marc Marquez.
The race began with contact between Martin and Marc Marquez at the chicane on the opening lap. Acosta, starting from the front row, seized the opportunity to take the lead and break away. But Martin fought back from eighth place, passing Marquez for second and setting his sights on Acosta.
Acosta's hopes of a home win for KTM were dashed when he lost the front at the Turn 2 chicane. He rejoined but eventually retired. That handed the lead to Martin and changed the complexion of the race.
With this result, Martin takes maximum points and regains the championship lead. Marquez finished second, with Marco Bezzecchi completing the podium in third. Martin's win signals that Aprilia can challenge the dominance of Ducati and KTM at the Austrian track.
The 14-lap sprint was tense from the start. Aggressive riding from the front-runners made positions unpredictable. Martin, who dropped to eighth, had to work hard to carve his way back. His consistency in the corners and tyre management proved crucial.
For Acosta, it was a bitter blow. He had been impressive all weekend, even topping a qualifying session. But a small mistake at a corner that often catches out riders cost him dearly. KTM must wait for another chance to win in front of their home crowd.
The championship battle is heating up. Martin and Marquez will resume their duel in Sunday's main race. The Red Bull Ring, with its heavy braking and traction demands, will test consistency and tyre strategy. Don't miss it.
