Martin Delays Surgery to Chase MotoGP 2026 Title

Jorge Martin has confirmed he will not undergo surgery for his compartment syndrome, opting to continue racing. The decision comes after his second-place finish at the Austrian MotoGP, which extended his championship lead to 12 points over Marc Marquez. The Aprilia rider stated that the risk of surgery is too great amid his title pursuit.

“I'm fine. It's true I haven't fully recovered from Misano. In the last laps I was suffering a bit, but not like in Misano. I didn't feel limited in my riding, and I don't think I slowed down because of it. So we'll continue like this, it's not the time [for surgery]: it's a big risk to undergo surgery. So we'll wait and try to do our best,” Martin told Sky Sport MotoGP.

This decision is a boost for the Aprilia team, who are fighting at the top of the standings. Martin, who has only one win this season in France, has shown incredible consistency with podium finishes. Although he hasn't returned to the top step, he has maximized every race to collect crucial points.

In Austria, Martin was involved in a fierce battle with Pedro Acosta of KTM. However, he revealed that he deliberately let Acosta pass to save fuel. “When we were close, a fuel warning appeared on my dashboard telling me I wouldn't finish the race. So since Pedro was close, I said 'come on, pass'. So I also avoided the risk of fighting for the position, because it's a track where overtaking is difficult. I stayed behind to also save some fuel, and as soon as the warning went away I wanted to attack again. But when I wanted to attack, even though I was getting closer, it was difficult to get really close. Then in the end, in the last six laps, I had no tire left. When upright, up to fifth gear I felt the bike sliding. Pedro did a great job, congratulations to him,” Martin explained.

With the decision to postpone surgery, Martin hopes to remain competitive for the rest of the season. He currently leads Marc Marquez by 12 points, and the title fight is heating up. The next race will be a tough test for him, especially with his physical condition not fully recovered. However, his fighting spirit is commendable.

The Aprilia team must also carefully manage Martin's condition. They need to ensure their rider doesn't push himself to the point of worsening the injury. With physically demanding circuits like Mugello and Barcelona, load management will be key. If Martin can navigate this critical period, his chances of defending the title will widen.

Martin's decision has also drawn attention from fans. Many support his choice not to risk surgery mid-season. They hope Martin can continue to shine and provide fierce competition in MotoGP 2025. Meanwhile, rivals like Marquez and Acosta will surely exploit any gap to overtake in the standings.

With eight rounds remaining, the MotoGP 2025 title hunt is still wide open. Martin must stay focused and maintain consistency. If he can overcome all obstacles, a second world title will be within reach. But if his physical condition deteriorates, everything could change. One thing is clear: Martin has shown steel determination to keep fighting.
