Marc Marquez capitalised on an opening-lap crash for Aprilia rival Marco Bezzecchi to win the San Marino Grand Prix and secure the lead in the MotoGP standings. This victory marks his fifth win of the season in seven races.
Bezzecchi, starting from pole position, made another grave error early in the race. After covering the inside line at Turn 1, he pushed too hard to keep the reigning world champion at bay and slid out at Turn 12 on the opening lap. This handed the lead to Marquez, who never looked back.
Jorge Martin of Aprilia initially challenged Marquez, even taking the lead with a surprise move at Turn 4. However, Marquez retaliated on lap 12 and Martin's pace dropped dramatically, relegating him to fifth. Alex Marquez and Pedro Acosta completed the podium.
Alex Marquez, running a special livery to pay tribute to the late Marco Simoncelli, recovered from a disastrous Saturday to finish second, securing a first one-two for the Marquez brothers this season. Acosta impressed again on the factory KTM, rising from seventh on the grid to third.
With this result, Marquez is now level with Martin at the top of the standings on 274 points, but remains ahead on countback thanks to his greater number of race wins. The championship battle intensifies as the season progresses.
Marquez's San Marino triumph underscores his dominance on the Ducati, while Bezzecchi rues another missed opportunity from pole. Martin, meanwhile, must regroup quickly to keep his title hopes alive.
