Marc Marquez has not only reclaimed the top spot in the 2026 MotoGP standings but also set a record never seen before in the history of the World Championship. After the Italian GP at Mugello in late May, the Spanish rider was 102 points behind the leader. Now, seven Grands Prix later, he has caught up to Jorge Martin at the top with 274 points. If the season ended today, Marquez would be champion due to having more wins.
This record surpasses the achievement of Francesco Bagnaia in 2022. Back then, the Italian rider overcame a 92-point deficit to Fabio Quartararo and eventually clinched his first MotoGP title. However, the 2022 season had no Sprint races, making the points gap easier to close. Marquez achieved his feat in the Sprint era, which demands extra consistency.
Ironically, Marquez completed his mission at the San Marino GP in Misano, the second Italian round of the season. The victory at Misano brought him back to the top, while Marco Bezzecchi, who had led the standings after Mugello, has now dropped 33 points behind Marquez. This drastic change shows just how quickly the championship dynamics can shift this season.
In MotoGP history, only a few riders have managed such a comeback. Besides Bagnaia, there was Valentino Rossi in 2006, who chased down 51 points from Nicky Hayden with six races to go. Rossi even led by 8 points before Valencia, but crashed and threw away the title. Meanwhile, in the Sprint era, Jorge Martin once cut a 62-point deficit to Bagnaia in 2023, but ultimately failed after an incident in Valencia.
Marquez himself had a tough start to the season. An injury at Le Mans forced him to miss races and undergo two surgeries on his shoulder and right foot. Returning at Mugello, he was still eighth in the standings. However, his impressive performances with Ducati Corse prove that a champion's mentality never fades. Now, with eight races remaining, Marquez could extend his lead if he stays consistent at his favorite circuits.
The impact of this resurgence is huge for his rivals. Bezzecchi must quickly find his best form after briefly leading. Martin, now sharing points with Marquez, can no longer relax. Meanwhile, Bagnaia, who was once a main contender, must work hard to close the gap. The title fight this season is expected to be fierce until the final race.
