MotoGP, Sportrik Media - Marc Marquez of Ducati Lenovo Team secured his first victory of the 2026 season in the Brazilian MotoGP Sprint at Goiania, capitalizing on a late error from Fabio di Giannantonio.

The sprint, delayed due to emergency repairs following a sinkhole on the main straight, introduced a complex strategic layer for all riders. Di Giannantonio, starting from pole with VR46 Racing Team, controlled the race pace from the front with consistent lap times. Meanwhile, Marquez adopted a measured approach in the early laps, running in third while managing tyre degradation and adapting to a circuit layout that does not fully suit his riding characteristics, particularly in sectors one and four.

After overtaking Fabio Quartararo of Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP, Marquez began to close the gap to Di Giannantonio during the middle phase of the race. Both riders demonstrated competitive balance on the Ducati GP26, but Marquez’s consistency under pressure proved decisive. With just over two laps remaining, Di Giannantonio made a minor front-end error and ran wide, allowing Marquez to seize the lead.

“In Thailand I was close, and today we did it—our first victory of the year, even if it’s in a sprint race,” Marquez told TNT Sports.

Marquez admitted that second place would have been sufficient given the circumstances, but immediately reacted when the opportunity arose. His opportunistic execution under pressure underlined his race management and situational awareness in a tightly contested sprint format.

“Honestly speaking, second place was enough, but when I saw his mistake, I tried to attack. I knew it would be difficult to overtake him, but he nearly lost the front and went wide,” he added.

Track conditions remained a central concern throughout the session. The discovery of a sinkhole on the main straight forced a delay of over an hour, with marshals carrying out urgent repairs to ensure the race could proceed. While the sprint was completed safely, uncertainty remains ahead of Sunday’s grand prix regarding the structural integrity of the surface.

“We pray to keep the conditions like this. The big hole is out of the racing line, so we were able to race. But if it moves onto the racing line, it will be impossible,” Marquez explained.

That concern was echoed by Joan Mir of Repsol Honda Team, who highlighted the potential safety implications if further track damage appears overnight. The situation places additional pressure on organisers to monitor and maintain circuit conditions ahead of the main race.

From a championship perspective, the result marks a significant recovery for Marquez following his penalty setback in Thailand. He now closes the gap to title leader Pedro Acosta of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, who finished only ninth in the sprint. The points deficit stands at 12 heading into Sunday’s race, keeping the championship battle tightly contested.

Despite the victory, Marquez identified Di Giannantonio as the primary benchmark for the grand prix, citing his consistent pace throughout the weekend. Tyre strategy, track evolution, and surface stability are expected to play decisive roles in the full-distance race. The Goiania round now shifts focus to Sunday’s main event, which will provide a clearer indication of early-season title dynamics in the 2026 MotoGP campaign.
