Marc Marquez asserted his dominance at the Red Bull Ring by setting the fastest time in a damp third practice session for the 2026 Austrian MotoGP. However, the session ended dramatically for the Ducati Lenovo rider as he lost the front and crashed at Turn 1 in the closing minutes, shortly after posting a 1m 29.663s.
The session began with wet patches from overnight rain, prompting most riders to stay in the pits. As the sun broke through and conditions improved, Marquez surged to the top, edging out Jorge Martin by 0.202s. Martin, who led briefly, had to settle for second on the Aprilia Racing machine. The Spaniard is still managing arm pump issues that plagued him at Misano, and surgery remains an option if the problem persists in Austria.
Pedro Acosta (Red Bull KTM) impressed in third, just 0.226s adrift, while Fermin Aldeguer (Gresini Ducati) and Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo) completed the top five. Bagnaia, who will have to go through Q1, faces an uphill battle from fifth.
The mixed conditions forced teams to strategize carefully. Some riders waited for a drier track, while others gambled early. Fabio Quartararo (Yamaha) ended up sixth, followed by Alex Marquez (Gresini Ducati) and Enea Bastianini (KTM Tech3).
With qualifying imminent, Marquez remains the man to beat, but his crash serves as a reminder of the fine margins at the Red Bull Ring. The battle between Ducati, Aprilia, and KTM is heating up. Stay tuned for the fight for pole position.
