Marc Marquez made a late charge to snatch the top spot from Marco Bezzecchi in FP1 for the San Marino MotoGP, with just 0.060s separating the two title contenders. The Ducati rider's final flying lap of 1m31.468s pipped Bezzecchi's Aprilia, setting the stage for a thrilling weekend at Misano.
After Thursday's heavy rain, the track dried for Friday morning's 45-minute session. Bezzecchi led for much of the running, improving to a 1m31.528s, but Marquez had other ideas. With 15 minutes left, he took over with a 1m31.680s, then found more time on his last lap to secure P1.
Both riders stuck with the medium rear tyre throughout, though Marquez switched to a soft front that had already done 12 laps, while Bezzecchi's medium rear was 14 laps old. The battle between the two is heating up as they emerge as the favourites for the championship.
Raul Fernandez impressed with third on the Trackhouse Aprilia, ahead of Alex Marquez on the Gresini Ducati and Johann Zarco on the LCR Honda. Championship leader Jorge Martin could only manage eighth, 0.267s off the pace.
The session saw two crashes: Pedro Acosta went down at Turn 1 early on, and Jack Miller suffered a bizarre fall on his out-lap. Both were unhurt.
Pecco Bagnaia's struggles continued as he ended up 18th, nearly a second slower than his factory Ducati teammate Marquez. The Italian will need to find answers quickly.
With Marquez and Bezzecchi locked in a tight duel, the San Marino GP promises to be a classic. Stay tuned for more action from Misano.
