Formula 1’s formation laps descended into chaos at Sepang as a damp track and new power unit regulations triggered a wave of unexpected engine stalls. The dramatic pre-race downpour already delayed the initial start by forty minutes before further drama unfolded.
Race leader Max Verstappen reported immediate power issues at the head of the field. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton crawled to a halt on the start-finish straight, reporting to his garage that depressing the throttle yielded zero response from the power unit.
The issue extended beyond the works squads, affecting other power-unit customer entries out on the circuit during the formation laps. Mercedes deputy team boss Bradley Lord revealed that the FIA rushed new software parameters to all garages up and down the pit lane to mitigate the recurring software anomalies.

The red flag was deployed to safely recover the field into the pit lane under chaotic marshalling conditions. Race control confirmed that the restart will revert to the original starting grid order, allowing all affected competitors to reclaim their initial qualifying positions.
