Lewis Hamilton admitted his surprise after securing pole position for the 2026 British Grand Prix Sprint at Silverstone Circuit. The seven-time world champion had not expected to challenge at the front following Ferrari’s difficult attempt to fight the leading teams at the previous round in Austria.

Hamilton demonstrated strong pace from first practice, ending the session at the top of the timesheet. That performance continued in Sprint Qualifying when he delivered a 1:28.376 to defeat championship leader Kimi Antonelli by only 0.011 seconds.

“We’re ahead of Mercedes. They and the Red Bulls have so much power, but my team just won’t let up and will keep pushing. That’s what I’m so proud of,” Hamilton said.

The result extended Hamilton’s improved run of form during the 2026 season. However, the 41-year-old stressed that Ferrari’s speed at Silverstone exceeded the team’s internal expectations before the weekend began.

“We definitely didn’t expect to come to Silverstone and compete for the front row. This is an amazing surprise and I’m ecstatic,” he said.

Ferrari’s recovery was significant after the Italian team endured a difficult Austrian weekend. Hamilton and his team were unable to apply consistent pressure at the front during that event, but Silverstone’s high-speed characteristics appeared to suit their package more effectively.

The first-practice data also gave Hamilton confidence in Ferrari’s race pace. Although there was limited time for a representative long run, he felt the car’s balance and tyre performance were strong enough to defend the leading position in the Sprint.

“I think our pace was good. We only completed a short long run in FP1 because there wasn’t much time, but we should have a good race,” Hamilton said.

Ferrari’s principal challenge will be maintaining track position against Mercedes and Red Bull, which Hamilton believes possess a power advantage. Their ability to follow closely could increase the pressure at the start, under braking and along Silverstone’s straights.

Sprint pole gives Hamilton an important opportunity to convert Ferrari’s single-lap improvement into victory in front of his home crowd. The narrow margin over Antonelli nevertheless means tyre management, the launch and defensive positioning will determine whether Friday’s surprise continues through the Sprint.
