Lewis Hamilton Backs Esteban Ocon Following Shock 2026 F1 Departure
TO NEWS OVERVIEW
Esteban Ocon will not be retained by Haas for 2027

Lewis Hamilton has thrown his full backing behind Esteban Ocon after the Frenchman's departure from the Formula 1 grid at the end of the 2026 season was officially confirmed by Haas ahead of the Sepang race weekend. The decision follows months of speculation surrounding a difficult campaign for Ocon, who is set to be replaced within the team by incoming talent Rafael Camara.

Given the advanced stage of the season and the extreme scarcity of available seats on the grid, Ocon is now facing the high probability of spending a year on the sidelines for the second time in his professional career. The difficult situation led Ocon to previously reveal that Lance Stroll was the only fellow driver on the grid who reached out to offer sympathy and support regarding his uncertain future in the sport.

Amidst the challenging circumstances, seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton has added his voice to those defending the Frenchman, revealing that he took the initiative to speak with Ocon in person rather than relying on digital communication. Hamilton emphasized the importance of face-to-face interaction when addressing difficult career moments with a respected competitor in the paddock.

"I’m not going to say what I said because it’s private and I didn’t text him," Hamilton confirmed to media, including Motorsport Week. "I didn’t know about the text situation, but I thought it would be better to see him in person. I think he’s one of the nicest guys here." Hamilton expressed genuine sadness over Ocon's exit while maintaining a strong belief that new professional opportunities await the talented driver ahead of the 2027 motorsport calendar.

"He’s always been so charming young lad," Hamilton stated. "I don’t know how his environment is or what his challenges have been. I guess it’s probably not been easy over the years, but I think he remains positive. It’s just sad to see him leave because I think he’s in a very talented environment. I think he deserves to be here. But when one door closes, it opens up new opportunities for something even better." While this high-profile endorsement serves as a significant morale boost, Ocon's final racing destination beyond the 2026 season remains shrouded in mystery.
