Liam Lawson expressed his frustration after being taken out of the Baku F1 race by his Racing Bulls teammate Arvid Lindblad during the second Safety Car restart. The Turn 1 incident sent Lawson spinning to the back of the field, while Lindblad continued to finish seventh.
The contact occurred when Lindblad attempted an inside move, clipping the rear of Lawson's car and leaving a hole in the floor of the New Zealander's RB. Lawson eventually recovered to 12th, marking his fifth scoreless race of the season. Meanwhile, Lindblad secured crucial points for the team.
“I need to watch it, but we’re all coming into Turn 1 on the restart and I just got smoked from my left. Put a hole in my floor as well,” Lawson told Sky Sports. “I don’t really know what gap he was looking for in the middle of both of us going into Turn 1. I just don’t understand it. Obviously great points for the team, but sucks for our race.”
His frustration was evident over the radio immediately after the incident. “Man I love getting taken out by my teammate, that’s pretty sick,” he quipped sarcastically. The clash came amid a chaotic restart that also eliminated Lando Norris, Pierre Gasly, and Franco Colapinto in a separate Turn 1 incident.
Despite his disappointment, Lawson acknowledged the importance of Lindblad salvaging points for Racing Bulls, especially with championship rival Alpine failing to score. “It is really important. We got very lucky today. They were much quicker than us all weekend. We need to try and turn it around next week,” he added.
Lindblad, who finished seventh after battling past Oliver Bearman and snatching the position from Esteban Ocon at the line by just 0.030s, apologized for the incident. “Firstly, I’d like to apologize to Liam and the team. I already went to Liam and said sorry. It wasn’t intentional,” Lindblad told Sky Sports. “I think if you watch the incident back, there was really nothing I could have done. It was a pretty bad Safety Car restart. We stopped about three times on that straight, cold tyres, brakes not working.”
The result moved Racing Bulls 15 points clear of Alpine in the fight for fifth in the constructors’ standings. Lindblad has now scored points in nine of the last ten races. Meanwhile, Lawson must quickly move on and focus on the next race.
