The Formula 1 paddock dynamic has faced fresh scrutiny following a flare-up of on-track tensions between top-tier competitors. Red Bull Racing team principal Laurent Mekies has firmly asserted that Max Verstappen will wield zero influence or voting power regarding the Racing Bulls driver line-up for the 2027 season.
This clarification comes directly in the wake of a contentious on-track collision between the reigning world champion and Liam Lawson during practice proceedings at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. The incident drew swift attention from race control, resulting in a one-place grid penalty for both drivers and sparking a frank exchange of words from the Dutch ace.
Reflecting on the skirmish after stepping out of his cockpit, Verstappen did not mince words regarding his on-track encounter with the junior team driver, labeling the maneuver as entirely lacking in tactical awareness given the precarious nature of the youngster's career status.

"Well, I do not think it is called unlucky. Maybe not very smart behavior, what he was trying to do there," Verstappen explained to reporters. He further emphasized that under the mounting pressure of fighting to retain an active seat in the premier class, a driver ought to approach wheel-to-wheel combat with much higher levels of maturity.
Despite the brewing friction inside the broader Red Bull family camp, Mekies moved swiftly to draw a definitive line between personal frustrations born from racing incidents and the structured corporate processes governing driver selections. Speaking to Sky Sports F1, the Milton Keynes squad boss insisted that sister-team roster decisions remain strictly localized.
"No, I think you know you have to separate both aspects. You have some things that were very unnecessary on the track and therefore are frustrating for the drivers involved and frustrating for the teams involved, and this is probably what you hear with Max's answer, and then there are driver decisions," Mekies stated.
As reported by Motorsport.com, Mekies reinforced that Verstappen possesses far too much industry experience to let a solitary flashpoint distort long-term team management strategies. Attention for the reigning championship squad remains locked squarely on unlocking additional aerodynamic pace to bridge the gap to their closest rivals.
