Lando Norris believes the opening lap was the decisive moment that ended his chances of securing a strong result at the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix. The McLaren driver lost several positions immediately after the start and was unable to recover, eventually finishing seventh.

Although Norris qualified only sixth, he was just 0.153 seconds away from a front-row start, giving McLaren confidence that a top-five finish was achievable at the Red Bull Ring.

That optimism disappeared on the opening lap when Norris was overtaken by team-mate Oscar Piastri and Isack Hadjar of Racing Bulls. Losing track position early left him trapped in traffic before the pit stop sequence further compromised his race.

"It was difficult for everyone because of the temperatures. I lost a couple of positions on lap one, then lost out again during the pit stops because we boxed Oscar first to cover Hadjar. That was really it. I don't have much else to complain about. We simply lost track position, and track position was the most important thing today," Norris said.

McLaren's strategy to prioritise Piastri's pit stop ultimately left Norris with even more ground to recover. While Piastri climbed to fourth place, Norris spent much of the race isolated and without a realistic opportunity to fight back.

Norris also reflected on his early battle with Piastri, explaining that he deliberately avoided taking excessive risks to prevent contact between the two McLaren cars during the opening corners.

"For the first few corners it was close. It's always difficult when your team-mate is alongside because you don't want to over-push. Oscar did a good job around the outside, and that's all there was to it," he explained.

The result prevented Norris from capitalising on McLaren's promising pace shown throughout the weekend. With Formula 1 now heading to the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, the Briton will look to bounce back in front of his home crowd.
