Kimi Antonelli further strengthened his position at the top of the Formula 1 drivers' championship by winning the 2026 Canadian Grand Prix at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. The Mercedes driver capitalised on the retirement of team-mate and closest title rival George Russell to increase his advantage in the standings.

The race initially promised an intense battle between the two Mercedes drivers. Russell remained within striking distance during the opening phase and appeared capable of challenging for victory. However, his afternoon came to an abrupt end midway through the race when a mechanical issue forced him to retire, handing Antonelli a significant opportunity in the championship fight.

Once Russell was out of contention, Antonelli controlled the race from the front and delivered another composed performance under pressure. The victory represents one of the most important results of his second Formula 1 season and further establishes the Italian as the leading contender for the 2026 world title. Mercedes also continued to benefit from the upgraded package introduced in Montreal, which proved competitive throughout the weekend.

Lewis Hamilton finished second to secure his best result since joining Ferrari. The seven-time world champion successfully defended his position against late pressure from Max Verstappen, giving Ferrari a valuable podium finish in its pursuit of Mercedes.

Verstappen crossed the line in third after spending the closing stages attempting to challenge Hamilton for second place. The Red Bull driver was involved in a late-race incident with Hamilton but ultimately remained on the podium. While the result delivered important points, Red Bull was unable to significantly reduce Mercedes' advantage.

Ferrari enjoyed a productive afternoon as Charles Leclerc secured fourth place, ensuring a strong points haul for the Scuderia. Behind him, Isack Hadjar continued his impressive form with fifth place for Red Bull, while Franco Colapinto delivered one of Alpine's strongest performances of the season by finishing sixth.

The midfield battle produced several noteworthy stories. Liam Lawson recovered from a difficult start to the weekend to finish seventh for Racing Bulls. Pierre Gasly climbed into the points despite starting from the pit lane, while Carlos Sainz and Oliver Bearman completed the top ten.

The race was marked by a high level of attrition, with six drivers failing to reach the chequered flag. In addition to Russell, reigning world champion Lando Norris retired from the race. Fernando Alonso, Alexander Albon, Arvid Lindblad and Sergio Perez also failed to finish.

The result further enhances Antonelli's momentum in the championship battle. With several of his closest rivals losing valuable points in Montreal, the Mercedes driver leaves Canada in an even stronger position heading into the next round of the season. Meanwhile, Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull will immediately turn their attention to the upcoming races as the shape of the 2026 title fight becomes increasingly clear.
