Kimi Antonelli Builds Huge 43-Point F1 Championship Lead

Kimi Antonelli emerged as the biggest winner from the Canadian Grand Prix weekend after extending his lead in the 2026 Formula 1 Drivers' Championship to 43 points. The Mercedes driver capitalised on a dominant victory in Montreal, while team-mate and closest title rival George Russell suffered a costly retirement.

Antonelli's fourth consecutive grand prix victory elevated him to 131 points after six rounds of the season. Russell, who retired from the lead due to a power unit failure, remained on 88 points, allowing the Italian teenager to open his largest championship advantage of the campaign so far.

The result further strengthens Antonelli's position as the clear title favourite. His consistency has become the defining factor of the season, with the Mercedes driver converting strong qualifying performances into victories while avoiding the reliability issues and strategic setbacks that have affected several of his rivals.

Behind the Mercedes duo, Charles Leclerc retained third place in the standings with 75 points. However, the gap between Ferrari's two drivers narrowed significantly after Lewis Hamilton secured second place in Canada. Hamilton now sits on 72 points, just three behind his team-mate.

A difficult weekend for McLaren weakened the positions of both drivers in the title race. Lando Norris remains fifth with 58 points after retiring from the race, while Oscar Piastri occupies sixth place on 48 points following another challenging weekend for the Woking-based team.

Max Verstappen remains seventh in the championship with 43 points after finishing third in Montreal. While the Red Bull driver continues to score consistently, he remains well behind the leading group and faces an increasingly difficult task if he hopes to rejoin the title battle.

Outside the top teams, Alpine enjoyed another productive weekend. Pierre Gasly's eighth-place finish and Franco Colapinto's strong sixth-place result moved both drivers higher in the standings. Alpine's continued points-scoring performances have established the team as one of the strongest midfield contenders in the opening phase of the season.

In the Constructors' Championship, Mercedes continues to hold a commanding advantage despite Russell's retirement. The pace shown throughout the Canadian Grand Prix weekend reinforced the effectiveness of the team's latest development package and highlighted its current position as the benchmark operation on the grid.

Although a significant portion of the season still remains, the championship battle is beginning to take shape.
