The high-stakes championship weekend at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez has presented an unexpected physical hurdle for Kimi Antonelli. The Italian youngster has been forced to manage a severe bout of illness while on the brink of securing his maiden Formula 1 world title.
Ahead of the track action, the Mercedes charger was excused from media commitments on Thursday to focus entirely on physical recovery. Needing just a ninth-place finish to etch his name into the history books as the sport's youngest-ever champion, his preparation was severely disrupted by sudden health issues.
Reflecting on the severity of his condition, Antonelli admitted that the initial days at the circuit were far from ideal, robbing him of crucial rest before the competitive sessions got underway.

"Very bad," Antonelli told media when asked about his condition. "I had high fever and stomach problems, so it hasn't been easy. Now I feel okay. Just low in energy."
"Just feeling pretty tired, so it's going to be important to try and sleep well because I haven't been sleeping well in these days. Hopefully tomorrow I will have more energy."
Despite lacking full vitality, the Italian talent delivered a solid performance during Saturday's qualifying session to secure fifth place on the timesheets. Following a grid penalty handed to title rival Max Verstappen, Antonelli will be promoted to fourth on the starting grid.
With the run to Turn 1 standing as the longest dash from the grid of the entire season, the front-running rookie recognizes the immense opportunity and danger that awaits when the lights go out on Sunday afternoon.
"It's a long run into Turn 1, so it's just going to be important to get off the line well," Antonelli explained regarding his race tactics. "Hopefully, we can gain a couple of places. Of course, we'll have to stay out of trouble as well because Turn 1 is always very tricky."
"If we get a good start, we have a good chance to then move forward. The race pace is still not as strong as Ferrari, but I think we can still do well," he concluded.
