Jorge Martin secured pole position for the MotoGP 2026 season opener with a blistering lap of 1:27.912s in a tense qualifying session. The Aprilia Racing rider edged out Marc Marquez of Ducati Lenovo Team by a mere 0.021 seconds.
The session was fiercely contested from the start. Martin, aggressive throughout, kept the pressure on his rivals. In the final moments, he extracted the maximum from his Aprilia to snatch the top spot. Marquez, who had briefly held the fastest time, had to settle for second, missing out by a whisker.
The surprise came from Pedro Acosta in third. The Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider posted 1:27.984s, just 0.072s behind Martin, signaling KTM's readiness to challenge. Marco Bezzecchi completed the top four with a 1:28.165s.
Further back, some big names struggled. Francesco Bagnaia, usually a front-runner, will start seventh with a 1:28.528s. His teammate Marquez was faster, but Bagnaia still has a chance to fight in the race. Meanwhile, Fabio Quartararo of Yamaha ended up ninth, considerably off the pace.
This qualifying result sets up a fascinating race. Martin from pole will aim to hold off the charging Marquez and Acosta. The circuit demands precision, and with such small gaps, race strategy and tyre management will be crucial.
For Aprilia, this pole is a valuable confidence boost, proving they can mix it at the front. Ducati, despite missing pole, still has two riders in the top ten. The race will reveal who is best prepared for the 2026 season.
