Johann Zarco has been given a three-place grid penalty for the MotoGP San Marino Grand Prix after being deemed to have impeded Marco Bezzecchi during Q2 qualifying at the Misano circuit. The incident occurred when Zarco was riding slowly in front of the Aprilia rider through Turns 5 and 6, causing Bezzecchi to lose his only clean lap.
The FIM MotoGP stewards investigated the incident and determined that the LCR Honda rider was riding irresponsibly. As a result, Zarco will start Sunday's race from 14th on the grid, dropping from his original 11th place. The penalty does not affect his starting position for the sprint race, where he will line up as originally qualified.
This marks the second consecutive weekend that Zarco carries a penalty into the main race. At Aragon, he had to serve a double long lap penalty for triggering a multi-rider crash that left him injured in May's Catalan Grand Prix. The additional penalty adds further pressure on Zarco as he strives to recover his form with LCR Honda.
Meanwhile, Bezzecchi impressed by securing pole position with a new lap record of 1m29.982s. Despite his delight at the result, he could not hide his frustration over the incident with Zarco. "I met a lot of yellow flags, and it was difficult to find the concentration. In the first stint, I stayed on the track one lap more and fortunately it was my best one, because in the second stint I couldn't have a clean lap. Zarco ruined my only clean lap, so it was a tough one," he said in parc ferme.
Bezzecchi will lead the grid ahead of Marc Marquez, while Fermin Aldeguer advanced from Q1 to put his Gresini Ducati third. The penalty for Zarco was accompanied by a similar sanction for VR46's Franco Morbidelli, who was found to have repeatedly impeded riders during practice. Morbidelli must serve a long lap penalty in the grand prix.
With this penalty, Zarco will have to work extra hard to compete in the main race. He will start from 14th, while his rivals are in more advantageous positions. However, with his experience and speed, a comeback to score important points is not out of the question. The San Marino Grand Prix will be a test of mental strength and strategy for the LCR Honda team.
The stewards' decision also highlights the consistency of rule enforcement in MotoGP. Some believe the penalty against Zarco is fair, while others argue that the incident was not entirely his fault due to the busy track conditions. Regardless, the incident adds drama ahead of the Misano race and has caught the attention of fans.
