Jari-Matti Latvala remains officially tied down as Toyota’s WRC team principal, with deputy team principal Juha Kankkunen stepping in for him across multiple rounds. Away from the management pitwall, the Finnish stalwart has kept his driving sharp by competing in the European Historic Rally Championship and maintaining a familiar presence on the Rally Finland entry list over recent seasons.

The competitive fire inside the 41-year-old hasn't flickered out, as he openly harbors a strong desire to make select WRC appearances moving forward. His pace remains razor-sharp, proven last summer when he dominated the Rally2 field at his home event in Finland and drove brilliantly to secure an impressive eighth place overall.

Jyvaskyla proved to be an exceptional experience that he thoroughly enjoyed, noting at the time that it certainly wouldn't mark his final competitive start. Given how congested the primary manufacturer entries are, he will likely pilot a Rally2 machine again since the Rally1 category is already slated to accommodate five to six full-time drivers.

Beyond pure driving enjoyment, another compelling factor pushes Latvala toward a grid return. Multi-world champion Sebastien Ogier recently surpassed Latvala’s long-standing record for WRC starts during the rally in Sardinia, pushing his career tally to 214 starts to eclipse the Finnish driver.

While Ogier's future schedule remains open, Latvala couldn't resist laying down a playful challenge. With the French star already confirming he will skip at least the 2027 season opener in Monte Carlo and showing limited enthusiasm for the upcoming technical regulations, the stage is set for a fascinating battle of records.
