Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Jacques Villeneuve has warned Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team over a potential threat from McLaren Formula 1 Team following a strong showing at the 2026 Japanese Grand Prix.

The Brackley-based team has enjoyed a dominant start to the season, winning the opening three races and establishing a clear lead in the constructors’ championship. Both George Russell and Kimi Antonelli have been directly involved in the fight for the drivers’ title.

However, the competitive picture shifted at Suzuka, where Oscar Piastri demonstrated strong pace in the early stages of the race. The McLaren driver managed to stay ahead of Russell during the opening stint, highlighting a clear step forward from the Woking-based outfit.

Villeneuve pointed to McLaren’s performance on a circuit known for its sensitivity to car performance as a key indicator that Mercedes’ advantage may not be as secure as it appeared in the opening rounds.

“We’ve seen McLaren being very good at responding last year. I would be worried if I were Mercedes now. The first two races felt easy, but after this race, they don’t feel safe anymore,” Villeneuve stated.

He emphasized that the performance gap between Mercedes and McLaren is smaller than expected, particularly at a track like Suzuka where car efficiency and aerodynamic balance play a decisive role.

“This is a track where, if your car is good, you will be at the front. A weekend where Mercedes does not finish first and second is not a good weekend. That is their standard,” he added.

Despite the pressure, Kimi Antonelli secured victory for Mercedes in Japan, capitalizing on a well-timed pit stop under the safety car that allowed him to cycle ahead of Piastri.

Piastri ultimately finished second, delivering McLaren’s first podium of the 2026 season and reinforcing signs of progress after a less competitive start to the campaign.

With McLaren closing the performance gap and Mercedes no longer holding a clear advantage, the competitive landscape of the 2026 Formula 1 season is beginning to tighten. The upcoming races will be critical in determining whether Mercedes can maintain its lead or if McLaren can sustain its momentum as a genuine title contender.
