IndyCar Standings Error Delays Colton Herta F1 Superlicence Bid
TO NEWS OVERVIEW
Herta made his fifth F1 practice appearance in Mexico

Colton Herta faces an unexpected hurdle in his pursuit of a Formula 1 seat after an administrative error left him agonizingly short of the required 40 FIA superlicence points. The bizarre mix-up came to light following a thorough investigation by motorsport's governing body, altering the American driver's immediate timeline.

Cadillac handed Herta his fifth FP1 appearance of the season at the Mexico City Grand Prix, firmly believing the outing would secure his final necessary point. However, FIA checks revealed that the nine-time IndyCar race winner actually remains one point shy of the threshold needed to race in F1.

The confusion stemmed from a publishing error in IndyCar's championship standings, which initially placed Herta sixth overall. Having finished level on points with Felix Rosenqvist, Herta was erroneously ranked ahead of his rival, who actually held the tie-breaker advantage due to more second-place finishes. The mistake was only caught after a reporter queried the series earlier in the week.

Under FIA International Sporting Code, drivers can earn an additional superlicence point by completing at least 100 km during an FP1 session without receiving penalty points. Cadillac still has four remaining opportunities to run Herta in practice to help him secure the missing point before the season concludes.

Meanwhile, Cadillac continues to evaluate its driver lineup options for next season, monitoring the performances of Valtteri Bottas while Sergio Perez has already locked in a long-term contract extension. Team principal Marcin Budkowski stressed the importance of consistent weekend performances when speaking to Sky Sports F1.
