Esteban Ocon's confirmed exit from Haas could spell the end of his F1 career for now, but it's worth looking back at a pivotal moment when George Russell overtook him in the queue for a Mercedes seat.
In the late 2010s, Ocon was on the cusp of becoming Lewis Hamilton's successor at Mercedes. He nearly stood in for an unwell Hamilton at the 2019 German Grand Prix—the same opportunity Russell later got. The wet Hockenheim track could have been the perfect stage for Ocon, a brilliant wet-weather driver already familiar with the W10. A starring performance might have seen him beat Valtteri Bottas and changed his career trajectory.
But the chance never came. Ocon had to watch as Russell, fresh from winning the 2018 F2 title, shone in his rookie season with Williams. Russell trounced Robert Kubica and dazzled the team with his speed. Meanwhile, Ocon never quite made an overwhelming case to be the next Hamilton.
Mercedes' junior programme aims to find the next F1 superstar. Ocon had leapfrogged Pascal Wehrlein as the favoured one. He was European F3 champion in 2014 and GP3 champion in 2015, while Wehrlein was DTM champion in 2015 at 18. But Toto Wolff judged Ocon to be more promising. It was subjective, but Wehrlein didn't create as favourable an impression.
In mid-2016, they were paired at Manor after Rio Haryanto's money ran out. Mercedes supplied Ocon to the small team, and that's where the direct comparison happened. Yet Ocon still couldn't convince Mercedes he was worthy of succeeding Hamilton.
Russell, on the other hand, never put a foot wrong in or out of the car. He was consistent and fast, convincing Mercedes he was their future. When the Mercedes seat finally became available, there was no doubt: Russell was the choice.
For Ocon, it was a bitter blow. He had to accept that his Mercedes opportunity was gone. Now, with his Haas departure, his F1 future is increasingly uncertain. But his story remains a reminder that in racing, timing and performance at crucial moments are everything.
